Ryan a Success Story

He's always seems to be in a hurry. He rarely stops walking and talking. Even mobile calls are often answered while he is still on the move. No danger of him allowing the grass to grow under his feet.

Kevin Ryan has come a long way since taking out a licence in June, 1998, and setting up at Hambleton Lodge, near Thirsk, and it comes as no surprise to see him exceeding targets and earning a prominent position in the trainers' league table.

The Irish-born trainer has worked tirelessly to build up his string, improve the quality, and steal the limelight with a timely big race success.

Yet he is already planning for next year. He has bought 15 yearlings and feels that a few of his current crop of juveniles will make their presence felt as second season performers.

"We have a great bunch of two-year-olds this season. Coleorton Dancer has never looked back since we gelded him. He has improved a stone and a half and won four for us. Distinctly Game was second in the pounds 200,00 St Leger Yearling Stakes at Doncaster and picked up over pounds 69,000. That race is a great incentive for British-bred horses and I think he is one to follow next year.

"Dario Gee Gee ran out of his skin to finish third in the valuable Two-Year-Old Trophy at Redcar and collected more than pounds 24,000.

"Throw The Dice is another that should develop into a nice horse next year and it's the first time I've had some quality three-year-olds for next year."

Ryan has 60 horses in training, not all at the same time, and would be happy if it increased to 70. He reasons: "That would be enough. If you get any more you lose the hands-on approach and have to rely on other people. I have an excellent team here but I like to be in control and that wouldn't happen if the string got much bigger. …
