Dynamic defender Ugo Ehiogu has stressed his determination to reach peak fitness again - and join the Boro revolution.

The England international, who returned from a calf injury to play for Boro reserves in midweek, believes this is a great time to be at the club.

He said: "It's very important for me to get back playing again.

"Since I came here I have had injuries that I have never encountered in my career.

"It can easily get you down, but you have to get on with it and stay positive.

"Now I just want to get playing regularly again, especially as I can see what is going on.

"I want to carve out a place in this team because it's looking very promising for the club.

"We have European games to look forward to and the team is taking shape. I want to be involved."

Ugo admitted that it had been difficult watching from the sidelines as Boro made their first venture into Europe against Banik Ostrava.

He said: "It was a massive blow for me to miss the club's first European games.

"I saw the match at the Riverside and the crowd was as vibrant as I have ever seen them.

"You really feel a part of things when the fans were as active as they were that night.

"I watched the second game on TV and I don't think I had any nails left at the end of the match.

"For a long time it could have gone either way and I was delighted for everybody when James got the late goal.

"Now, hopefully, I can earn a run in the side and win my chance in Europe.

"Just the prospect of having Lazio here is fantastic. It's great for the fans and it's a chance for all of us to see how far the club has developed."

Ehiogu is now targeting a first team return for Boro's Premiership clash at Blackburn Rovers on October 16, which is a prelude to the UEFA Cup group game in Egaleo five days later. …
