Former Gateshead boss Tommy Cassidy returns to his old club tonight with a message and a warning for the Tynesiders, (writes Bob Moreland).

While Gateshead, Blyth and Bishop Auckland are at the wrong end of the UniBond League's Premier Division, ex-Newcastle United midfield man Cassidy has driven Cumbrian club Workington to the top of the table.

He has every intention of consolidating that lead tonight.

Cassidy said: "I do not like to see any club in trouble, let alone one where I have been the manager, and I do hope Gateshead see better days.

"They will know, however, I am chasing three points from 7.45 tonight."

Gateshead, second from bottom, have lost twice in consecutive matches and badly need a boost before they travel to Northern League Horden in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Director of football Derek Bell, who played for Gateshead when Cassidy was manager, said: "Our league position makes bad reading, but it is at times like this when we must stick together. …
