David Longstaff insists Newcastle Vipers must ensure there is no room for Guildford Flames to hide on the ice tomorrow.

The Vipers play their second of a two-game spell at Whitley Bay's Hillheads tomorrow when they entertain last season's play-off winners (6.00).

Last Sunday Newcastle beat Milton Keynes Lightning 4-2 in a physical Winter Cup encounter at Hillheads which saw Rob Trumbley and Kurt Irvine thrown out for fighting early in the game.

Guildford will come to Tyneside with a team packed with Slovaks, Flames' coach Stan Marple having gone down a very different road to Vipers coach Rob Wilson in his recruitment in recent seasons.

Longstaff knows Newcastle will do well to quickly unsettle a skilful team which will not fancy playing on the small Hillheads ice surface.

The Great Britain captain said: "Guildford are a skilled team and we are going to have to grind them down, throw some hits and get them to shy away from 50-50 pucks. …
