The homeowner found the man on his porch Monday and swung at him with a shovel before the masked intruder fled the apartment complex at 3801 Crown Point Road.

The intruder didn't get far. He fell into a retention pond, then trailed by his muddy footprints to an alley behind a business at 9965 San Jose Blvd.

Officers arrested a 34-year-old transient at 12:45 a.m. Tuesday on charges of burglary, possession of burglary tools and resisting an officer without violence, police said.

The victim, 30, told police he heard a noise on his porch at 11:30 p.m. and went downstairs to confront a man who was wearing dark clothing and a ski mask. He tried to hit the man twice with a shovel, but the man ran down the road with the victim in pursuit. The victim and a neighbor heard something splash into the retention pond; one saw a man in dark clothing and a ski mask swimming to shore and running away, police said.

Police met the victim a few minutes later and tracked muddy footprints down San Jose Place and behind the business on San Jose Boulevard, where they found a man in black clothing and ski mask, and ordered him to stay put. The man fled again but was caught a few seconds later. Police said the man was soaked and carried a duffel bag containing tape, a Taser, binoculars and more clothing. He had latex gloves and a knife in his pocket.
