St. Johns Rebounds for Pair of 8-0 Victories

St. Johns Country Day's soccer team bounced back from a loss to Frederica Academy of St. Simons Island with a pair of 8-0 victories over district rivals First Coast Christian and Gainesville-based The Rock Academy.

The wins lifted St. Johns to 6-1 in the five-team District 2 of the Florida High School Athletic Association's single class for fall soccer.

Assistant coach Mike Pickett said he was pleased with the Spartans' performance after being blanked by Frederica 4-0 Oct. 6.

"We played much better," Pickett said. "It was just an overall better team effort."

St. Johns gets a second shot at Frederica Tuesday, and was scheduled to have played district rival Gainesville Oak Friday night. Oak Hall is the only other team to beat St. Johns this year.

"We expect a little better performance [against both teams]," Pickett said.

The two recent wins gave the Spartans an overall record of 7-2.

2 NAMED FOR HS HEISMAN

Orange Park High athletic director John Green has nominated Meghan Speicher-Harris and Josh Kinsey for the annual Wendy's High School Heisman Award, sponsored by the national fast-food chain to recognize academic and athletic achievement.

The two student-athletes join other nominees in state competition, with winners becoming eligible to receive college scholarships. State finalists will be announced Oct. 28.

Speicher-Harris, daughter of U.S. Navy Capt. Scott Speicher, whose plane was shot down the first night of the 1991 Persian Gulf War.

His daughter was nominated for her accomplishments on the school's swim team and her academic excellence. Kinsey was chosen because of his leadership role on the Raider golf team, where he frequently finishes with medalist honors.

"He's a great role model," Green said. "Obviously he's an extremely gifted golfer. Millions of us would like to shoot scratch, and he goes out there and does it on a regular basis.

"I picked Meghan because she accomplished a lot in swimming," Green said. …
