To celebrate the cream of the North- East's exporters for 2003-2004, a prestigious awards ceremony was organised by the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC) in conjunction with UK Trade & Investment and Lloyds TSB back in July.

Three companies were recognised for their exporting achievements with others highly commended by the judging panel.

Mandy Bainbridge, of Colliewobbles, scooped the UK Trade & Investment New Exporter Award, which celebrates the work of an individual new to exporting.

Mandy and her husband Marcus run a farm at Egglestone, near Barnard Castle and launched Colliewobbles, which offers a range of gifts for border collie and dog lovers via mail order on their internet website to help boost their income.

The couple were also awarded funding from Defra's Rural Enterprise Scheme to expand the business to include a range of sheepdog and agility courses at the farm.

Highly commended in the New Exporter Award category was Graham Borthwick, of Platinum Detox Ltd, which offers a novel detoxification process for the human body through the soles of the feet.

He and his staff have successfully launched the product in a string of new markets including Scandinavia and the Baltic regions and North America and have now set their sights on new markets in the southern hemisphere.

Adrian Teasdale, of Inovica Ltd, was presented with the NECC Innovation in Export Award. This is awarded to an individual engaged in export trade who can demonstrate added value to their company through innovation, for example, product design, management systems, logistics, innovative technology etc.

Inovica has created a new encryption programme that protects internet programming language stopping the theft of information and images from websites and in the past year it has been selling and exporting its product to more than 50 countries around the world.

Peter Johnson, of Techtonik Ltd, scored a double in the awards being highly commended in the Innovation in Export category and winning the Lloyds TSB Achievement Award, which recognises outstanding achievement in export by an individual. …
