Volvo's XC90, which is the creation of Geordie car designer Peter Horbury, is proving so popular that production has had to be increased by 80%.

Last year the vehicle attracted 62,000 buyers, of whom 4,000 were in the UK, where the Volvo is now the second best seller in its class.

Such is its remarkable popularity throughout 2004 that Volvo has increased production from the original 50,000 a year to a whopping 90,000.

This is great news for parent company Ford, which is now receiving a handsome return on its investment, thanks to the creative talents of the former North East schoolboy.

Peter is now the American-based chief designer of Ford's Premier Automotive Group, which includes not only Volvo and Land Rover but also Aston Martin.

The innovative XC90 beats similar chunky off-road vehicles by offering accommodation for up to seven people rather than just five.

It is officially called a sport utility vehicle, which means that it is ideally suited to life in the urban jungle, but can beat an impressive track through the really rough stuff too when required. …
