Article excerpt

Byline: By Harry Garner

Life and times in the Seventies and Eighties as experienced and recalled by a retired PR executive in his diaries.

This week In 1978:

Oct 28: Sadat of Egypt and Begin of Israel jointly awarded Nobel Peace Prize in Norway for Camp David deal. Still a long way to go in Middle East, but at last some progress. Coincidentally, Dan Air is offering cheap flights to Norway for pounds 59. Will try to find business to do there with Enid who is proving to be considerably more than a secretary. Oct 29: Meeting with new boss of Northumbria Tourist Board, Ron Morrison-Smith. Seems OK. Keen to boost tourism revenue up from last year's pounds 80m. Mentioned my `Forgotten Kingdom' idea and he seemed interested.

He wants to push outdoor activities because he thinks seaside holidays in the region will continue to decline. Passed this on to Whitley Bay people who are very concerned that they may be left behind. Will do best to see they aren't.

Oct 31: End in sight for La Strada. Club has been bought by National Westminster which wants to use site for new Wearside branch. Problem is they all appear stranded in the Sixties, glittering mirror balls and all.

At City Hall for Siouxsie and the Banshees with Enid. Just a shadow of their former selves. The band has failed to progress and although she still looks the stuff in her jack-boots etc, the material isn't there. Enid very disappointed.

Nov 1: Got copy of Council plan for future of Tyne and Wear up to 1991. …
