So the North-East is not to be the only part of Britain to have a referendum. In fact a very large part of Europe is to get the opportunity to vote on the new European constitution.

This is to be heartily welcomed. For the first time since 1975 the British people are to have a focused and open debate on our political and economic contact with the rest of the continent.

Europe has brought this country many economic benefits. This region in particular, with its large manufacturing sector, and in particular the tens of thousands of jobs dependent on the Nissan plant in Washington, have plenty of reasons to be glad of our trading links with the continent.

So great is this integration that it might well be argued that we are closer to the continent economically than we are to London.

Certainly to business executives flying from Newcastle or Durham Tees Valley airports, it matters not whether they will touch down in London, Amsterdam or Paris ( all are equal markets, all can be exploited. …
