Town centre retail chiefs and security teams have welcomed a blitz on truancy in Middlesbrough.

They threw their backing behind the Gazette, police and council's 'Truancy Free Zone' campaign, launched yesterday to reduce the number of truants in town and increase attendance in schools.

Youngsters who loiter in the town centre when they should be at school are fuelling low-level crime and anti-social behaviour in town, it is claimed.

Inspector Guy Hall, head of Middlesbrough's town centre police, said: "Truants are attracted to the town centre because there are plenty of things to entertain them and it is somewhere they think they can easily merge into a large number of people.

"But while in the town centre many get involved in shoplifting and anti-social behaviour.

"We fully support and welcome the campaign. It is absolutely vital that children attend school, not only for education reasons, but also for their own safety. …
