Retailers on UK high streets enjoyed better-than-expected monthly sales in October, a survey from employers' group the CBI has found.

Sales increased for 37pc of retailers taking part in the CBI's distributive trades survey, while 26pc reported a fall in sales during the month. The CBI's retail sector index showed a balance of +11 in October, well above the -9 balance hit in September.

Robust summer boosts profits

A "ROBUST" summer, thanks to cheaper airfares and stronger economies, have helped drive up profits at airport operator BAA.

The group said pre-tax profits for the six months to September rose to pounds 363m, up 16.3pc on the same period last year. The number of passengers passing through its seven airports jumped 7.5pc to 77.5 million.

Fire firm is in a fine pickle

THE company that makes Branston pickle has predicted a possible "run" on the product in stores after its factory was gutted by fire last week.
