A Friend has paid tribute to the life of a young Teesside woman killed by a hit and run driver a year ago today .

Beverley Smith, 20, of Enderby Gardens in Hemlington, died after she was struck by a car on Cass House Road on November 4, 2003.

Self-confessed drug-user Shaun Michael Harvey, 34, of Eskdale, Hemlington, admitted causing death by dangerous driving.

He was jailed for eight years in January which was later reduced to six in the Appeal Court.

Elaine Forth, mother of Beverley's boyfriend Steven Forth, 26, said she wanted to mark the first anniversary of Beverley's death by remembering her wonderful qualities.

Elaine said: "She was a bright, bubbly girl that loved her family. She loved her animals and always had a book in her hand.

"She was a hard-working young lady, who was loved to bits by her family and she had a lot of friends.

"She was just an all-round wonderful girl."

She added: "I wanted to pay tribute to her, it was just one thing I felt I needed to do because she was just such a smashing girl. …
