-- J. Calvitt Clarke III, professor of history at Jacksonville University, has been selected to join Children Inc.'s board of directors. Children Inc. is a non-profit, international child sponsorship organization.

-- The Jacksonville Zoological Gardens elected officers and new members for its board of directors. Officers are John Hayt, chairman; Howard Coker, chair-elect; Pamela Phillips, secretary; and Anjie Merritt, treasurer. New board members include Kelly Madden, Bob Moore, Dean Piacente and Kerri Stewart.


-- Robbie Beese, 15, has achieved Scouting's highest honor. On July 31, he became an Eagle Scout.

Beese is a member of Troop 304 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He has held positions including assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, senior patrol leader, scribe, chaplain aide, Order of the Arrow representative, and Camp Shands Summer Camp staff member. His Scouting honors include the Cub Scout Arrow of Light, Brotherhood Member Order of the Arrow, Florida Historic Trails 100-Mile Award, U.S. Heritage Award, Recruiter Award, World Conservation Award, National Camping Award, Life Guard Award, Eagle Scout Bronze Palm, Fort Clinch Historic Trail Award, Olustee Historic Trails Award and St. Augustine Historic Trails Award.

For his Eagle project, he assembled a flagpole in front of Shindler Drive Baptist Church and relandscaped the area. He also painted the boardwalk from the church's fellowship hall to its educational building. Beese, a sophomore at Eagles View Academy, is the son of Lynn and Robert Beese of the Westside.


-- Air Force Airman 1st Class Laquana Ayers graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. Ayers is the daughter of Janice Ayers of the Westside.
