Two couples and three students could hold clues to a sex attack on a teenager by a gang armed with sticks.

They were all near the scene of the assault but may have thought the victim and her three attackers were merely involved in japes, police in Durham said today.

The 17-year-old was hit twice with a stick and knocked unconscious before being assaulted. Officers believe she may have been dragged or carried unconscious from the street on to a secluded grassed area, where she was attacked.

The attack happened on Thursday, November 11 as the girl was making her way back to her college on the outskirts of the city.

Detectives say closed-circuit TV cameras confirm the girl walked up New Elvet about 11.25pm.

As she approached traffic lights at the road junction outside students' centre Dunelm House, she was taunted by the gang.

The gang were carrying what appeared to be sticks and engaging in a mock sword fight as she neared them.

In the skirmish that followed, the girl was hit on the side of the head and lost consciousness. …
