A dentist who made foul and degrading comments about a patient when she started legal action over botched treatment is facing a disciplinary hearing.

Leslie Rippon Smith, of Bridge House Surgery, Framwellgate Bridge, Durham City, faces a string allegations of misconduct in relation to 13 patients.

He appeared before the General Dental Council in London yesterday for the first day of a week-long case relating to incidents said to have taken place between 1999 and 2002.

Mr Smith, who qualified in Newcastle in 1978, now faces being struck off for serious professional misconduct, which he denies. The council heard how Mr Smith allegedly insulted a married woman and her solicitor and refused to deal with her complaint.

She left his practice after years of "declining care", and it was later discovered he had billed the NHS even though she was a private patient, the council was told.

Alison Foster QC, representing the GDC, said: "It is alleged he failed to co-operate properly with the complaint. …
