Roy's the Boy for the Future Says Mellberg

Sweden defender Olof Mellberg has backed Roy Aitken to go it alone in club management and maybe one day take charge of Scotland.

Former Newcastle player Aitken moved to Villa Park as David O'Leary's No 2 and has clearly impressed the Midlanders' centre-back Mellberg.

The Swede does not necessarily think Aitken is ready to succeed Berti Vogts as Scotland boss but he believes he could do the job in the future.

"He is certainly doing really well at Aston Villa, and I think he would be a good manager in club football and possibly at international level as well in the future," said Mellberg.

Sweden take on Scotland at Easter Road tonight, and Christian Wilhelmsson is just glad the friendly is not at Parkhead.

The 24-year-old Anderlecht winger was on the receiving end of a 3-1 defeat in the Champions League in Glasgow last season and he admits the atmosphere took him aback.

"I have never experienced anything like that. It was brilliant and when the Champions League song played it was fantastic," said Wilhelmsson. …
