One victim of domestic abuse Mr S, 42, a sales director from Newcastle, recalls a terrifying attack.

"In the summer of 1998 my ex came home drunk after an office party. I was asleep in our bed having returned myself from an evening with mates.

"I was woken by her screaming as she came through the bedroom door swinging a cricket bat.

"She brought it down across my legs. I managed to avoid most of the blow and took the bat away from her by twisting it out of her hands.

"In her anger she went to the kitchen and came back with a rolling pin.

"I asked her what was going on and why she was doing this, but all she did was swing at me, aiming for my head, shattering a light fixture above and spraying glass everywhere.

"I managed to block the object with a pillow and twist it again from her.

"By now I was scared, as even though she had shouted at me and made me feel very small so many times before, she had never used violence. …
