A mother told today how she and her two young sons were left destitute after losing all their possessions in a blaze.

Flames and smoke ripped through the family home in Coltman Street, North Ormesby, as Joanne Clayton and her two sons Lee, aged four, and Daniel, five months, slept.

The blaze wrecked their home and the family escaped death or serious injury with just two minutes to spare, according to firefighters.

The mother-of-two awoke to the stench of smoke as it poured into her bedroom at 7am on Sunday, and screamed for help.

She said: "I opened the bedroom door and it all hit me in my face.

"The flames were further back but the smoke was really thick in front of me."

The 24-year-old managed to smash her bedroom window which woke the neighbours who raised the alarm.

Luckily Joanne had both her children in bed with her as Lee was ill.

The neighbours found a ladder and she was able to pass the children through the window. …
