Injured Soldier to Sue US Military for Pounds 1.25m

A Teesside soldier is suing the American military for pounds 1.25m after suffering serious injuries while serving in Iraq.

Corporal Jane McClauchlan, 33, from Hartlepool, was travelling in a Land Rover with two other soldiers from the Royal Military Police and an army interpreter when a US tank transporter smashed into them.

She suffered multiple skull fractures, fractured neck vertebrae, a punctured lung, a broken leg, ribs and pelvis, and a damaged liver when she was thrown from her vehicle. She has suffered permanent brain damage including memory loss after the incident on May 7 last year.

Her mother, Pat Maddison, of Spalding Road, Hartlepool, said: "It was a horrific accident.

"She has spent a fair amount of time in hospital but she is coming along fine."

Along with Cpl McLauchlan, the claim is being made by her commanding officer and front seat passenger, Staff Sergeant James Rogerson, who also suffered lasting injuries, Corporal Stephen Smith and Kuwaiti interpreter Khalid Allahou. …
