Our Roof Is a Real Hit!

A very 'green' house with plants on its roof has clinched a top design award.

'Whitecliff' in Loftus is no ordinary three-bed home.

Begun in June 1999 and finished earlier this year, the self-built house is packed with environment-friendly features - including that roof of plants!

Home to garden designer Maria Mountain and husband Tony Laycock, it was rated "in every way an exemplary scheme" by judges in Redcar and Cleveland Council's second Design Awards.

But plants on the roof?

Maria explained: "The house sits a bit lower than the drive so by putting plants at the front of the roof, you see a nice green area. Behind it is just grey concrete tiles!"

The timber-framed house features lots of insulation - largely from recycled newspaper - and is designed so each room gets lots of natural light.

The expanded and renovated Grade II listed Gisborough Hall Hotel also won one of the three top awards, being hailed "an example of how a large, modern development can be placed with success in a countryside setting in association with fine buildings". …
