Residents were promised today that a 40-strong gang of youths terrorising a Teesside neighbourhood will be tackled.

People in Town Farm, Middlesbrough, said they have been plagued by gangs throwing bricks and mud at their windows and cars.

The youths, said to be aged between ten and 18, have been entering the grounds of Unity City Academy, which backs on to homes in Siddington Walk and Tansley Avenue, to enter a derelict building that is due for demolition.

Fires have been started in the building and two people have been arrested for stealing books from the property.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: "The residents are frightened.

"No one has been out to have a go at them because we are partial to keeping our windows. It's not a pleasant experience and it is very intimidating."

Middlesbrough Council said it had only just been made aware of the problems but was already asking street wardens to liaise with extra police presence in the area to tackle the gangs. …
