2 Arrested for Weapons at Schools; Youth at Oceanway Middle Had Fake Weapon; Man at Ed White High Had .25-Caliber Pistol

Jacksonville police arrested a 14-year-old student Sunday at Oceanway Middle School for carrying a fake gun in his backpack during an athletic event on campus, according to a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office report.

The student, who was not identified by police because he is a minor, told other students he had a weapon. Those students then informed a school resource officer who detained and searched the student.

A black and brown handgun which "appeared as if it could expel a projectile" was discovered in the student's backpack, according to the police report. Florida law says weapons that fire darts or other projectiles are not allowed on school grounds.

While the gun was decidedly fake, the student was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed firearm or weapon into a school.

"Clearly, strict enforcement of all state statutes as they relate to safety on school campuses is most important in today's law enforcement communities," Sheriff's Office spokesman Rick Wood said. …
