Celtic manager Martin O'Neill has heaped high praise on Sir Alex Ferguson as the Manchester United chief reaches another key landmark in his career.

Ferguson will celebrate his 1,000th match in charge of the Reds in the Champions League against Lyon on Tuesday ( and O'Neill believes he is still untouchable in the modern game.

Ferguson earned his reputation at Aberdeen by ending the Old Firm's domination, which prompted then chairman Martin Edwards to hand him the Old Trafford job.

According to some he was just one game from the axe before going on to win the FA Cup in 1990 and since then he has made them one of Europe's superpowers by lifting the Champions League, European Cup Winners' Cup, European Super Cup and everything there is to win domestically time and time again.

His continued spats with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger prove his appetite for more success has not diminished and O'Neill believes Ferguson is up there with the best managers in the world. …
