There Are Lessons to Be Learned from Smoking Bans

The Government has announced that it will ban smoking in workplaces, cafAs and pubs and bars that serve food in England.

The White Paper on Public Health, released on November 16, set out the measures. Pubs which don't serve food and private members' clubs are exempt from the ban.

Norway and Ireland have introduced nationwide smoking bans and the Scottish Executive has just voted to introduce a smoking ban, to come into force from spring 2006, in enclosed public places.

The question investors must ask themselves is how this White Paper, which is likely to become law within four years, will affect connected firms?

The easiest method of weighing up the possible impact on the firms is to look at places where the ban has already been implemented.

Since the smoking ban took effect in New York for example, there has been a trend towards holding dinner parties because smokers are choosing to entertain at home rather than going out to a restaurant. …
