A showcase centre at the heart of an East Middlesbrough community is again operating successfully after a rescue package was put together by Middlesbrough Council.

The future for the TAD Centre, built with European and City Challenge funds looked bleak when the company running it went into liquidation in January last year.

It had run up losses of pounds 200,000 a year.

The council stepped in and put together a package to bring the centre, opened in 1994, back into constructive community use.

Now local community groups have been told that the centre is back "in working order".

SureStart, the Government-backed programme for parents with young families, the adult education service, the Neighbourhood Nurseries initiative run locally by Nunthorpe Nursery, Unity City Academy, Middlesbrough Primary Care Trust and Cleveland Resource and Learning all now have bases at the centre.

At a meeting of east Middlesbrough community councils, Nicky Walker, Middlesbrough Council's executive councillor, for resources and Paul Slocombe, the council's Director of Strategic Finance outlined proposals for further development of the centre. …
