A Leading Stockton councillor has hit out, claiming the authority failed to bid for cash to improve a recreation ground in Thornaby.

Councillor Steve Walmsley, leader of the Thornaby Independent Association, says an expected bid for grant money to improve the Harold Wilson recreation ground was not submitted by the council. Instead, he says, an alternative bid for improvements for pitches used by Thornaby and Ingleby Barwick FC was submitted to the Football Foundation and was successful.

But the claim has been rejected by the authority's Cabinet member for leisure, who says the improvement work is a priority for the council and moves are being made to bring it about.

Cllr Walmsley said: "I have no problem with that but why was the bid for the Harold Wilson recreation ground not submitted as well?"

He said plans for improvements had been under way since 1999 and the other bid was much later. "We thought the Harold Wilson ground bid was the priority. …
