Carlisle progressed to the FA Cup second round in a dramatic single goal win over League Two side Bristol Rovers.

It was no more than the Cumbrians deserved after dominating for long periods but unable to find a breakthrough until the 109th minute of the tie.

Manager Paul Simpson said: "It was a fantastic result for us. A strong performance where we've shown some real character.

"I am delighted for fans and we've sent them away with a good night of football and a big FA Cup victory."

Carlisle reverted to a 4-4-2 starting line-up, with Peter Murphy back on the left side of midfield after injury.

It was 23 minutes before the first telling action when Christian Edwards blocked Brendan McGill's shot.

McGill went close three minutes later when he shot narrowly wide on a ball from Karl Hawley.

Paul Trollope was on target with a header as Rovers came into the game. But Junior Ogogo spurned their best chance on 38 minutes when his pace took him clear only for a poor final touch, allowing Matty Glennon to save at his feet. …
