Morpeth's Delyth James found the handicap of 2min 20sec no problem as she reeled in the field to win the Junior Women's 4km race of the DP Furniture Express North Eastern Harrier League fixtue at Riverside, Chester-le-Street.

Despite competing at under-17 level, James forced herself into pole position after overhauling Jarrow and Hebburn's Georgia Campbell in the final 100 metres to win by five seconds.

Elswick's Ashley Gibson, taking a break from her Loughborough University duties, clocked the second-fastest time overall after working her way through to fifth, one place ahead of Daniell Watts of Morpeth.

Blaydon look as though they have unearthed another talented youngster in Helen Girtig.

The teenager recorded the fastest time after forcing her way through to fifth place in the under-15 girls event.

Victory in the 3km race went to Morpeth's Laura Weightman, whose 12:08 was good enough for the fourth-best time behind Girtig (11:52), Shildon's Abby Suffield (12:02) and Durham City's Rebecca Shield (12:06). …
