Plans for an extensive development in a Teesside hamlet have sparked concerns among nearby residents.

A public meeting was held in Egglescliffe Village about the application to build 19 detached homes by the green and on surrounding farmland.

The proposals were submitted by two farmers who are also planning to restore Egglescliffe Old Hall as part of the scheme.

About 80 people attended the meeting amid fears the development would not be in keeping with the character of the 11th century village.

It is also believed the conservation area could not cope with extra traffic and parking.

Tony Harrison, who lives in the village, said: "We are worried about this application in respect to the possible overcrowding of the area.

"This conservation area is one of the visual jewels of Teesside. It mainly consists of 18th and 19th century terraced housing and there are very few detached dwellings."

Egglescliffe Parish Council chairwoman, Sue Ireland, said there are also concerns regarding an increase in traffic. …
