Pigeon fanciers have been left distraught after arsonists torched a new loft.

Craig Ransome and his dad John spent eight weeks building the loft in Dormanstown from scratch to replace a rickety 60-year-old one. It was supposed to be a quality new home for 40 birds. But after spending pounds 700 on wood and materials, and working almost every day for the past two months on building the loft, their handiwork has gone up in smoke.

It is believed someone scaled a 7ft metal fence just after midnight on Sunday.

The 28ft x 8ft loft, off Armitage Road, was then deliberately torched.

Thankfully the loft was empty, as the birds due to occupy it were safely cooped up in Craig's other two lofts a few yards away.

But it is still a crippling blow for Inshore Fisheries warehouse worker Craig, who poured his time and money into it.

He said: "I got a phone call from my mam, telling me what had happened. I didn't want to go and see it at first - I didn't want to face all that hard work going overnight. …
