Unite with One Voice to Make Agenda Heard

Constructing Excellence was set up to provide the construction industry with a support network to enable it to become more productive and profitable.

Its main aim is to achieve a change in construction productivity and culture by tackling major issues and problems in the industry. By focusing on innovation, best practice and productivity, it has developed a strategy and the mechanisms to deliver the process, product and cultural changes that are needed to drive major improvements that would be beneficial to all.

The region has responded phenomenally well to Constructing Excellence and we have seen some real improvements ( however there is still a long way to go if we are to realise and confirm our position as world- leaders in the industry.

Trade organisations such as the National Federation of Builders (NFB), The Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) and the Construction Confederation have historically given a single united voice to the various sectors in the construction industry and traditionally lobbied the Government about policy changes regarding health and safety, employment issues and technical and environmental issues.

For the industry to move forward and address the issues, it is important that all trade bodies unite and work together, creating additional strength and support throughout the sector.

It is essential that communication remains open and that organisations share experience, knowledge and ideas about how the industry can improve.

Even though Constructing Excellence is working as an `umbrella' organisation, we must not underestimate the role of the traditional trade organisations as they are instrumental in the implementation of its agenda and the performance of the industry.

By working alongside, the trade organisations are able to engage their own members who may not have had direct access to Constructing Excellence's ideas and products.

Organisations like my own, the NFB, are in an ideal position to provide the support and materials to businesses who want to implement some of Constructing Excellence's schemes like key performance indicators, which are a way for businesses to benchmark their performance in all areas of construction and their improvements. …
