They loved it. Then they hated it. And it wasn't long before they felt sick!

We asked a bunch of hungry young Middlesbrough rugby players to tuck into a freshly made Sprouty Cake ( and guess the secret ingredient.

They sniffed it nervously and scrummed down to do battle.

Then they tucked their tastebuds round a slice of the moist sweet treat packed with 250g of Britain's most hated veggie.

Young Adam Nolson, whose chef dad Michael had baked the cake, wasn't sure from the start.

His mum Alex whispered that the 13 year-old Acklam Grange pupil absolutely hates Brussel Sprouts!

And it's true, he was less than enthusiastic about his dad's masterpiece.

"Is that a pea?" he asked dad, poking a finger into the cake. "Or is it grass?"

Pals Michael Thornbur and Adam Phoenix, both 14, confessed they were puzzled. "A bit cheesy!" they thought. "But it's all right."

But they needed little encouragement to polish off their portion. …
