Bids to Fix Dune Walkovers Exceed Atlantic's Budget

ATLANTIC BEACH -- The city received four bids last week to repair several dune walkovers that were severely damaged during Hurricane Jeanne in September, but all of the bids were over the city's budget for the work.

The dune walkovers that will be repaired are at Ahern, Sixth, 11th, 13th, 18th and 20th streets.

The four contractors that bid on the project are Jacksonville-based A-One Dock Builders with a bid of $103,153, Middleburg-based BNC with a bid of $106,207, Crystal River-based Schippers Marine Construction with a bid of $91,729 and Jacksonville-based Sheza General Contractor with a bid of $102,000.

The city's estimated budget for the work was $45,000, but that amount was just for upgrades to the dune walkovers at 18th, 20th and Ahern streets. The damage caused by Hurricane Jeanne forced the city to include the dune walkovers at Sixth, 11th and 13th streets.

After the hurricane, the city closed some dune walkovers to the public while they made repairs or added steps. …
