Cabosse Club Wants Injunction Lifted over Depot; Court Fight Being Waged over a Disputed Deed to Historic Site

The Caboose Club, a west Nassau County Alcoholics Anonymous chapter, has staked its claim to the historic Callahan train depot, saying it was legitimately given the historic building in September by the former officers of the West Nassau Historical Society.

In papers filed Monday, Caboose Club representatives asked that a temporary injunction barring the club from taking control of the historic building be lifted.

The injunction was imposed Oct. 22, a day after the new officers of the West Nassau Historical Society filed suit alleging a deed signed by the society's previous officers that gave the depot to the Caboose Club was fraudulent because it was created after the new officers had taken over the Historical Society on Oct. 14.

The disputed deed handing over the depot to the Caboose Club was signed Sept. 14, but not filed until Oct. 20.

On Oct. 21, the Caboose Club evicted the West Nassau Historical Society and the Greater Nassau County Chamber of Commerce from the depot. The club also demanded the West Nassau Historical Society give the club $9,100 representing an insurance claim received by the society for storm damage to the depot's roof.

In its suit, the West Nassau Historical Society also said that as a non-profit corporation, society officers do not have the power to give away the corporation's assets without a vote of the entire membership.

The suit included affidavits from four people who said they were lifetime members of the Historical Society, but had never been notified of any meeting to discuss the disposition of the depot.

The West Nassau Historical Society also alleged the society's previous president, former Callahan Building & Zoning Administrator Bobbi Boone, had filed a false insurance claim, and that the roof was not damaged. …
