An eminent prof- essor who will head an independent education comm- ission in Newcastle has been dragged into a political wrangle.

The city council's new Liberal Democrat leaders have set up the commission in a bid to improve education standards but the move has been called into question by their Labour opponents.

The commission will be chaired by Prof Peter Tymms, professor of education and director of the Curriculum Evaluation and Management Centre in the School of Education at Durham University.

Prof Tymms was formerly a lecturer in Edinburgh and at Newcastle University and is head of a project which involves monitoring achievement in more than 4,000 primary schools.

The city council awarded the contract to the centre without going through the usual tendering procedures because it has already built up a database of information relevant to Newcastle schools.

The row blew up at a meeting of the council's executive after deputy Labour leader, Coun Nick Forbes, asked if officials had checked whether Prof Tymms has any links with the Lib Dems. …
