Police today welcomed long jail terms imposed on Teesside armed robbers Shane Round and Peter Caswell.

Round, 31, formerly of Meadowfield Avenue, Middlesbrough, and Caswell, 52, of The Crescent, Linthorpe, were jailed at Teesside Crown Court.

Both had pleaded guilty, at the eleventh hour, to robbing staff at the Thornaby Ex-Servicemen's Club of around pounds 3,500 and to possessing a firearm.

As reported in later editions of yesterday's Gazette, Round had seven and a half years added to ten he is already serving for an earlier axe-raid on a Teesside store. Caswell was jailed for 11 years.

Detective Sergeant Gareth White, who led the hunt for the robbers, said he was "very pleased" with the sentence, adding: "This sends out a clear message to criminals that they will not get away with it."

Judge Peter Bowers said they were both "classic cases" of lives ruined by drugs.

He commended the officers in charge of the case, DS White and DC John Scott, and gave pounds 200 rewards to three "public spirited" citizens who did their best to thwart the robbers - two former soldiers who confronted Round and Caswell, and a taxi driver who pursued their getaway car. …
