BUFORD -- Charlton County has seen Buford celebrate a state title at its expense and the Indians weren't about to let the Wolves do it again.

Instead the Indians did all the celebrating on Saturday after Charlton claimed the Class AA state title with a 35-20 win over the Wolves in Tom Riden Stadium.

It is the second championship for Charlton, which captured the 1999 Class A state title.

The victory ended Buford's run of state three consecutive titles. The Wolves were going for their fourth consecutive crown and history -- West Rome is the only other team to have won four consecutive crowns, winning the Class AA from 1982 through 1985.

Last year, the Wolves routed the Indians 31-3 in the same game, at the same place.

Buford, using a zone defense, shut the Indians' powerful passing attack down in 2003 and smothered Charlton when it tried to run.

This time, however, the Indians ran first and passed second. …
