John O'Brien, 39, was the Gaul's chief engineer. His mother Margaret died at the age of 86, four years ago, before the second inquiry was called.

John, who was single, grew up in the area now known as the Meadow Well Estate in North Shields.

Seven months before the tragedy, John's father William had died. His younger brother Billy, 63, lives in Darlington and his sister, Phyllis Andrieux, 66, in North Shields.

North Shields man James Wales would have celebrated his 30th birthday on Valentine's Day, seven days after the Gaul went missing.

He lived in Redburn, in the Ridges, now part of the Meadow Well.

James was third engineer and this was his first job aboard the Gaul.

He has one daughter, Michelle, 35, of Royal Quays, North Shields, and his wife Doreen, of North Shields, is now 57.

James had two sisters ( Christine, now 57, and Aileen, 48.

His brother Kenneth died aged 39. Ronald Bowles was second engineer and just 22 when the Gaul went down. …
