No Paws for Thought as Firemen Free Puppy

Firefighters are used to rescuing cats from trees, but rarely do they get a 999 call to free a mischievous puppy who gets her head stuck in a watering can.

But when inquisitive nine-week-old labrador Barley became trapped in the plastic container, her owners had no choice but to call for help.

"I was filling up some pails with the watering can, and when I finished I put it down on the floor by my feet," housewife Julie Summers said yesterday.

"The next thing I know the dog was running around with it bouncing on her head.

"I thought she was playing so I went to pull it off, but when I tried it was obvious that it was well and truly jammed."

Julie, who lives in Dovedale Avenue, Sunnybrow Crook, County Durham, tried to remove the can herself by greasing the dog with washing up liquid.

But when its head started to swell up, leaving it struggling to breathe, she was forced to call 999.

"They told me it wouldn't be a priority, but they were round in 10 minutes. …
