Johnson Puts Bite Back in the Vipers

Centre Shaun Johnson hit a late winner to put the Vipers back on course after Saturday's surprise Winter Cup defeat against the Peterborough Phantoms.

Picked out by Steve Gallace's cross ice pass, the former GB international struck first time to send the puck into the big gap left by Capitals netminder Dave Trofimenkoff and clinch the league points.

The Vipers established a 3-1 advantage at the first break but let it slip away during the second period during which the Capitals scored two powerplay markers and a four-on-four goal.

Laurie Dunbar's fifth-minute strike was nullified by a slap shot by Vipers player-coach Rob Wilson which capitalised on the team's first powerplay opportunity.

Gallace fired the puck under Trofimenkoff's glove for the second and the he poached the third from the edge of the crease on 19 minutes.

Dino Bauba's hit and hope shot from behind the Vipers' goal rebounded off the back of netminder Doug Teskey's legs for the Capitals' powerplay second on 21 minutes to make it 3-2 but Viper Rob Trumbley finished off a crisp one touch passing move involving Johnson and David Longstaff. …
