Cash Crisis Could Halt Racer

Speed ace Gary Robertshaw could be forced to put the brakes on his racing career after running out of cash to defend his championship title.

The 29-year-old scooped the 2004 John Cooper Challenge Club Class trophy in his debut season of competing.

But now, Gary, who owns Boldon-based Robertshaw Racing, says his career driving his Mini Cooper S may be on the skids if he cannot find an extra pounds 15,000 in sponsorship for next year.

Gary, of Whitley Bay, beat off stiff competition from 27 more experienced racers to make it on to the podium at Brands Hatch this year after an incredible season.

Now he is eager to defend his title in 2005 but has only managed to raise around pounds 35,000 of the pounds 50,000 required to take part in all six races and stand a chance of winning. …
