Met row over satanic abuse . A ROW erupted today over a move by the Metropolitan Police to teach officers how to spot signs of satanic ritual child abuse.

The force sent 30 officers on a training course in ways to detect ritual abuse. But child protection experts accused it of wasting time and resources when there is no clear evidence that satanic abuse takes place in Britain. A government inquiry in 1994 concluded that claims of abuse by devil-worshippers were based on little more than imagination.

MPs pay tribute to Serjeant . THE RETIRING Serjeant at Arms, Sir Michael Cummins, has been praised by MPs from all sides of the House.

The Leader of the Commons, Peter Hain, praised his 23 years of service, including five as Serjeant at Arms. Mr Hain said he had overseen the introduction of TV coverage and showed determination in the face of this year's security breaches.

Major General Peter Grant Peterkin will take over as Serjeant at the end of the month. …
