THERE is a distinct sound of the axe falling at the Telegraph. After the clearingout of most of the management suite, editorial may be next in line. First to face the cut is the bloated sports department. Former sports editor David Welch left in the autumn and the department is enviously regarded as having the fattest budgets in the paper. Editor Martin Newland is known to want to refocus the paper back to news. The department itself may be the last to know. Sports editor Keith Perry says: "On or off the record, that is news to me. I honestly haven't heard anything about it."

. WILL 5 Live's star turn Nicky Campbell, right, hoof it up to Manchester when the rest of the station is reluctantly dispatched there as part of the commitment to a BBC regional presence?

Insiders doubt it.

Clapham-based Campbell has a large brood of children and the word is that he has no intention of shipping them up north - a point he is said to have made over lunch to the station's controller Bob Shennan. We gather commuter deals haven't been ruled out for the top names - so start collecting the Air Miles, Nicky.

. THE Spectator's Christmas lunch last week was a jolly affair. Boris Johnson made a good speech and proposed a toast to their absent publisher, Kimberly Quinn. Some of the staff seemed reluctant to join in until the paper's wine critic Simon Hoggart enthusiastically stepped forward to raise a glass to "absent friends". Just days later he was confronted by the News of the World with the allegation that she was his mistress.

. ROBERT Posner is quitting the Literary Review after falling out with editor and coowner Nancy Sladek. Posner, who was the protege of the late editor Auberon Waugh, is regarded as the soul of the magazine.

Relations got so bad that he now refers to Sladek as "the thing".
