Police in Newcastle launched an appeal for witnesses yesterday (WED) following the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl.

Three men were arrested in connection with the incident, which is said to have taken place at the rear of the Bridge Hotel early on December 11, but have since been released on police bail. Police say a number of people walked past the area, commonly known as The Gardens, during the alleged attack. Witnesses are asked to call (0191) 214-6555, ext 32045.

Air raising

A BOTTLE of air from the Lake District that was put up for sale on the internet site eBay had reached pounds 60 last night.

Lake District National Park ranger Pete Collins had filled the bottle at 3,000ft on Helvellyn, with money from its sale by the Cumbria Tourist Board being donated to the Lake District Tourism and Conservation Partnership, which raises money for footpath repair schemes and other conservation projects.
