Freezing Weather to Hit Big Getaway

A WHITE Christmas is looking increasingly likely - but forecasters are warning that gale-force winds, torrential rain and ice could bring chaos to the great festive getaway.

There could be the most widespread snow seen on 25 December since 1995.

Bookmakers are offering odds as short as 1-6 in Scotland, and the Met Office has said some parts of the country could get " significant falls".

Forecasters added: "Much of Scotland, Northern Ireland, northwest England and Wales are likely to see a white Christmas, but anywhere could see snow on the big day."

The millions of people leaving London to visit friends and family today could be battered by some of the stormiest weather of the year.

The Met Office said virtually all parts of Britain faced the risk of disruption.

Train companies are preparing to cope with an estimated four million passengers.

And from today until 28 December, BAA will handle about two million people at its UK airports. …
