A Keystone Heights soldier wounded in Iraq is home for the holidays and thankful for the community's support.

U.S. Marine Cpl. Will "Billy" Silcox, 27, injured in an explosion in Fallujah, Iraq, visited a second-grade class at Paterson Elementary on Thursday to thank the students for the letters they sent him.

"I let them bombard me with questions," said Silcox, who said the media hasn't painted a good picture of the war. "It doesn't feel like our country is behind us. But you can always count on kids to be behind you. They remind me why I do what I do. Those little smiles grow up to be big smiles."

Silcox grew up in Middleburg, attended Middleburg High School and later earned his GED before entering the military. He lives with his father, William Silcox, in Keystone Heights.

On Nov. 10, Silcox kicked in the door of a building in Fallujah and a hand grenade exploded. Scrap metal penetrated his leg, injuring his femoral tendon. …
