Top DJ Spins into Atlantic Tonight

DJ and producer Max Graham puts his heart and soul into writing and mixing progressive original material, yet ironically a remix of Yes' Owner of a Lonely Heart from the 1980's may be his biggest hit to date.

"It's doing amazingly well in the U.K.," Graham said during a recent telephone interview from his home in Montreal, Ont.

"It's a great song, super catchy, and I'm bringing it to this generation and the dance floor."

Graham brings his unique mix of base line and melodies to The Atlantic in Jacksonville Beach tonight. It will be his first visit to the Jacksonville area. In true DJ style, Graham's show will respond to the crowd that night.

"It is always interesting going to a place you've never been before," he said. "I'll choose three or four people out of a crowd and watch their reaction."

Graham, who's 33, started his DJ career in the mid-90s at the Atomic nightclub in Ottawa, Ont. His diverse turntable sound was originally inspired by the Sasha-esque progressive music of the time. Graham also developed the skills and reputation for playing extended six- and eight-hour sets.

"It's hard to find a place to do that," Graham said. "When you have a crowd that trusts you, you can delve into all kinds of music and expose the crowd to a lot of different kinds of styles."

Some of the different style music includes Graham's original songs. After gaining attention as a DJ, he started writing original material in the late '90s. Several of his original works appeared on other artists' CDs, including Tiesto and Paul Oakenfold. One song, Airtight, held the No. 1 spot on the Balance Record Pool chart and was nominated for a Juno Award -- the Canadian version of the Grammy award in 2001.

"Airtight opened doors for me," Graham said. "It is the single record that put me on a lot of radars. …
