Gascoigne Improving after Pneumonia Scare

Football star Paul Gascoigne is out of danger and recovering well in hospital after a pneumonia scare, his agent said last night.

The troubled former Newcastle United and England midfielder staggered into a London hospital on Saturday and doctors feared he had a collapsed lung.

The 37-year-old was gasping that he could not breathe and was in danger of collapse in the Princess Grace Hospital in London.

His agent Alex Armitage, who initially believed the star was seriously ill, moved to calm fears that Gascoigne's well-documented problems with drink and drugs had caused the illness.

Mr Armitage said: "There was a big scare but Paul is now up and about and in good spirits.

"I spoke to him last night and his condition is improving, he is taking the course that the doctors expected and should be out of hospital by the end of the week.

"He is only suffering with pneumonia, not the countless other things that have been rumoured.

"He's getting better. …
