Model Quitter Fronts New Antismoking Ad

A NEW antismoking campaign is launched today, featuring successful quitters describing how they managed to give up tobacco.

In a change of emphasis the NHS has abandoned images of dying smokers in favour of a more positive approach, which they hope will inspire rather than frighten smokers.

The face of the campaign is a 31-year-old former model who has not smoked for eight months.

Nicola Harrington had been a heavy smoker since she was 15 but gave up her 20a-day habit for the sake of her five children - Lucas, 11, Lacie, eight, Jack, five, Summer, two, and Harvey, four months.

The latest phase of the NHS's antismoking drive is aimed at the thousands who try to quit as a New Year's resolution. It highlightsthe fact that smokers-like Harrington are up to four times as likely to quit if helped by their local NHS Stop Smoking Service, plus nicotine replacement therapy, than by willpower alone.

Ironically, Harrington was prompted to quit after being frightened by previous adverts featuring testimony of people dying of smoking-related illnesses. …
